Checklist for home birth

Below is a checklist of things it might be nice to have ready before the birth. You can download a free printable version of the list by clicking here .

Checklist for home birth:

  • Towels in different sizes
  • Bed linen that can get dirty and can be easily washed
  • Washcloths for hot and cold wraps
  • Feeding vessel and accessories if you want to give birth in water
  • Music for relaxation. Prepare any A playlist of music you like
  • Table for the midwife's working tools (an ironing board can also be used)
  • Camera that can take pictures and film - remember to check that there is enough space on the memory card and that it is charged
  • Plastic/wet sheet, to protect the mattress on the bed
  • Warm soft towels, baby duvet, baby clothes and nappies for the newborn
  • A solid dining table or similar and a good lamp (if there is a need to sew up stretch marks after birth)
  • Large garbage bags (one for garbage, one for laundry)
  • A roll of ordinary garbage bags
  • Panodil and Ipren (for after-sickness and/or pain from possible stitches)
  • A clean washing dish/plastic bowl
  • A stack of cloth diapers that have been washed
  • Wet wipes
  • Juice, apple juice, fruit and food in the fridge for use during labor
  • The freezer filled with ready-made food, buns and other things for the days after the birth
  • Comfortable underpants and loose clothing for mother after birth
  • Nursing bras and nursing pads
  • Large pads for the first days after birth
  • Ice pack (for soreness and swelling after childbirth). Made by wetting an ordinary pad with water and putting it in the freezer. Remember to put a piece of fabric between the bandage and your skin.
  • Lip balm, straw, possibly pilates ball, possibly heating pad or canister
  • A pre-packed bag in case of transfer during or after the birth + car seat
  • "Birthday celebration" - flag, food and drink to celebrate a birthday
  • Good working relationship with the midwife; work table and light for journaling, preferably the option of some food and a "resting place" for longer sessions
